DaBrinker Mailbag: Richie Promised $500K in 48th Senate District Race?

 

A reader emailed me the following note:

P. Ritchie is talking to anyone who will listen in St. Lawrence County that Skelos and Libous have promised her $500,000 for her "grassroots" campaign. Once again the Long Island bosses are trying to buy North Country voters. So far they've only got a County Clerk and a few onlookers.

This would not surprise me in the least bit if true.  As I mentioned in an earlier post:

Like the Senate Republicans are really going to loan a staffer to her campaign and not promise other resources.  They don't loan staffers out without following through all the way with money, messaging, and using their candidates as sock puppets.

Put yourself in Patty's shoes for a minute. Would you announce you are running for office before you worked up a budget for a viable campaign?  Or reached out to potential supporters to gage financial support, endorsements and to identify potential volunteers?  Running for Senate, especially against an incumbent is expensive and takes a lot of planning and work -unless you have Libous and Skelos backing you with $500,000+, campaign staff, scripts and press releases.

So why is Patty saying this:

But Mrs. Ritchie, who is already receiving help from a Senate minority staffer, said the committee leaders "haven't promised anything other than a resource if I need information. I'm going to rely on the local people. It's going to be a grass-roots campaign."

I don't know why she would specifically mention to the press that she hasn't been promised resources from the SRCC.  But, I'm not buying what she's selling.  Once again, as I wrote before:

As the campaign heats up, the SRCC will take control of the messaging while tightening the purse strings.  Mr. Barry Ormsby knows this and explained he won't run because of it:

Mr. Ormsby also said he was concerned that, if he were to prevail in a Republican primary, he would not have "full control" of his message to voters when challenging state Sen. Darrel J. Aubertine, D-Cape Vincent.

So the SRCC led by Libous/Skelos hasn't promised anything and Patty is going to run a positive campaign.  Keep the jokes coming Patty, I like to laugh.
