On Feb 8th a cub reporter did a story about two CNY Assembly lawmakers not receiving a chairmanship. But by comparison Senator David Valesky was given a leadership role in just his third term.
In the state Assembly, seniority matters:
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver recently announced leadership positions for his conference, and two members from Central New York- Assemblyman Al Stirpe and Assemblywoman Barbara Lifton - were left without posts.
----
Stirpe began serving in the Assembly in 2007, making this his second term. Lifton, D-Ithaca, just started her fourth term.
By comparison, Sen. David Valesky, D-Oneida, is beginning his third term in the state Senate, and this year was named second in command of that house.
Is Stirpe bitter about being left out?
"I would think that if someone has an outstanding skill set in a certain area, they'd be able to get a chairmanship in that area without waiting 10 or 12 years," he said. "But without that expertise, I can see why they wait awhile. It takes you two to three years to figure out how things work."
"Chairmanships are leadership positions," Lifton explained. "New people don't have leadership positions in any organization, and the state Legislature is no different. Plus, there are so many people in the Assembly. They usually go by a class at a time to find people to fill leadership posts. If you didn't do that, I think you'd have a lot more infighting than we do now."
What the reporter failed to mention, or maybe she is unaware, is that there are only 32 Democrats in the Senate Majority while there are 109 Democrats in the Assembly Majority. Every Majority member in the Senate gets a committee to chair or a leadership title. On the other hand, the Assembly has such a large majority that it takes many years for members to move up in seniority and receive a chairmanship or leadership post. So Delen Goldberg, do your homework next time and report the whole story.
And Delen, how about congratulating Senator Valesky for receiving such a powerful spot. He deserves it. And CNY will benefit for his new title.
